When creating realistic scenes, get into the habit of using materials from actual photographs and movies. Good references can provide clues as to how certain objects and environments look at different times of the day or under certain conditions.
By carefully analyzing the position of highlights and shadows in a photograph, it is often possible to reconstruct the basic position and intensity of the light acting on the image. Much can also be learned by using existing sources to reconstruct lighting arrangements.
With the above in mind, it's time to create lights for a scene. While the number, type, and their individual properties of light sources will vary from scene to scene, there are three basic types of light sources: critical light, supplemental light, and background light, which work together in concert.
